We Are Bernie

A few years ago, our Mom, a certifiable “Bernie Bro,” bought a Bernie Sanders “Inauguration Doll.”

After a summer visit with her grandparents, my niece, Tay Tay, who was 3 years old at the time, was packing her backpack to return home. At the last moment, Tay Tay grabbed the Bernie doll and stuffed it into her bag “because it looked like her Grandpa.” You be the judge:

The Grandpa-Bernie doll was my niece’s constant companion… she ate with him, she cuddled with him at night. One day, she left Grandpa-Bernie unattended and one of our pit bulls used him as a chew toy. We think it was Jaan Ji. The dog:

Grandpa-Bernie:

As any kind adult would do, my sisters and I hid the destroyed Bernie doll from Tay Tay and purchased a new one. At least, we tried to hide it from Tay Tay.

See… what had happened was… our other sister made a great suggestion to remake the chewed up Bernie doll into a a Grandma doll to accompany the beloved Grandpa-Bernie doll. Before we could get to the Grandma-Bernie remake, our Mom texted us a picture of the destroyed Grandpa-Bernie doll:

Apparently Tay Tay was upset because she believed that because she hadn’t taken care of her Grandpa-Bernie, he got hurt by our dogs. With tears welling in her big brown eyes, she brought the injured Grandpa-Bernie to her Grandpa and Grandma for consolation. Grandma flexed her super-Grandma powers and told Tay Tay that they would take Grandpa-Bernie to the hospital to fix him. She found the new Bernie doll and swapped him out (again) and all hearts were soothed in our home.

We began remaking the hospitalized Bernie doll into a Grandma-Bernie doll immediately… floral dress, apron with a pocket, extra wide-brim sun hat, blue face mask:

We even made a cap for Grandpa-Bernie:

They are inseparable.

Out of an abundance of caution, we did purchase more Bernie inauguration dolls. Since that initial mauling, Tay Tay was careful not to leave Grandpa-Bernie and Grandma-Bernie unprotected from any trolling pit bulls. The two “extra Bernies” were then converted to Uncle-Bernies:

Our Uncles are from Australia and supporters of the arts, so we used two Aboriginal art patterns for their shirt collars and cuffs: “Sandy Creek Black” by Janet Long Nakamarra on the left Uncle-Bernie and “Women’s Body Dreaming Blue” by Cindy Wallace on the right Uncle-Bernie.

So now, everyone in our immediate family wants their own Grandpa-Grandma-Bernie dolls. We will continue to scour the internets for new Bernie inauguration dolls. Until then, from our heart to yours. #OurWorldOurHeart
