Trailblazing cartoonist, Barbara Brandon-Croft is the first Black woman to be nationally syndicated in the mainstream press. Her latest book, “Where I’m Coming From” was published by Drawn and Quarterly in 2023.

A few of Ms. Brandon-Croft’s released panels are below. Original Where I’m Coming From strips are in collections at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

Barbara Brandon-Croft

Ms. Brandon-Croft is best known for creating the comic strip, Where I'm Coming From, and for being the first nationally syndicated African American female cartoonist. 

Brandon is an alumna of Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. She has previously worked as a fashion and beauty writer for Essence magazine. Her illustrations have appeared in EssenceThe Village Voice, The Crisis, and MCA Records.
