Say ¿Qué?: Top Ten Olympic Medalists

The very first Olympic Games took place in Greece in 776 BC and was held every four years until it was banned in 393 AD by a Roman emperor for religious reasons. The modern Olympics was not revived until 1896. Four years later, women competed in the Olympics for the first time. The first “Olympic Village” was built in 1924. Until 1904, previous Olympic champions received a crown of olive leaves plus praise and recognition, instead of the gold, silver and bronze medals awarded today.

Seoul Summer Olympics 1988

South Koreans had every reason to be proud to be hosting the 1998 Summer Olympics in Seoul, especially considering their turbulent history just a few decades before. Who was I supposed to root for when the USA was up against South Korea?

My inner conflict was captured perfectly in one of my favorite TV series, Superstore, Season 2, Episode 1, titled “Olympics.” The store manager, Glenn Sturgis. played by Mark McKinney, is disturbed by one of his employee’s (Mateo Liwanag, played by Nico Santos) support for the Philippines over the USA in the Olympics. Hijinks ensue and there is growth in the end.
